Tutorial for Pervasive Health 2012

“Pervasive Healthcare: Current and Emerging Research”

Pervasive healthcare can be defined as healthcare to anyone, anytime, and anywhere by removing locational, time and other restraints while increasing both the coverage and quality of healthcare [1]. The broad definition includes prevention, healthcare maintenance and checkups, short and long-term monitoring, personalized healthcare, incidence detection and management, and, emergency intervention, transportation and treatment.

Level and Suitability: The level is introductory/intermediate and should be useful to people working or planning to enter in the areas of pervasive healthcare. Professors, graduate students, and industry professionals may want to attend the tutorial. The audience will be provided handouts and slides. We encourage more interaction by allowing sufficient time for questions and comments.

Tutorial Outline:

I. Wireless and Mobile Technologies in Healthcare: Smart computing, sensors, RFID, wireless LANs, 3G/4G networks, satellites, personal area networks

II. Components of Pervasive Healthcare

  • EMR/EHR
  • Telemedicine and health monitoring
  • Independent living and technologies
  • Medical and clinical decision making
  • Pervasive health applications

III. Research problems and Future

  • Personalization
  • Smart medication management
  • Context-awareness in healthcare
  • Wireless decision making & cognitive load
  • Wireless in behavioral health, addiction and overdose management
