Oldenburg – city life beyond well-trodden paths.

(otm) We couldn’t have put it better: “Oldenburg, quite something!” Simply and to the point, it expresses what Oldenburg’s residents and visitors think and feel. The University City with 160,000 inhabitants comes across as friendly and open to everybody. It is proud not only of its historical buildings and old quarters with their distinctive architecture and magnificent villas.

The city of Oldenburg, Germany has been honoured by the Association of German Research Foundations as its choice for the prestigious "City of Science" title. Oldenburg is also a major location for education, research and science, with the Carl von Ossietzky University, three Universities of Applied Sciences and more than 70 general schools as well as vocational, specialist and private schools. It is this variety that gives this “compact” city its personality. So what’s the best way to explore it? The answer: by taking it easy. Whether on foot, by water or on a bike, Oldenburg is ideal for a relaxed tour of discovery. A great way to start is with a guided tour. Every Sunday at 11:00 hrs and from April to December every Friday at 14:00 hrs., public guided tours set off from the entrance to the Castle.
Or, if you want to get away from it all, relax in one of the many beautiful parks and gardens throughout the city. There’s also plenty of opportunity to exercise your legs on cycle paths, inline skating routes and nature trails. The river Hunte flows right up to the Old Town, combining maritime atmosphere with the flair of an urban environment. There’s always plenty going on because of the huge range of events that offer something for everyone. Most cultural highlights are within easy reach of the Old Town, including colourful markets, trend-setting bars and must-see buildings.

The surrounding countryside is full of yet more leisure opportunities. Because Oldenburg is in such a central location, all the regional attractions are just a short trip away.
