Call for Short Papers and Posters

Pervasive Health 2013 invites submissions in Short Papers, and Position Papers and Posters categories. These categories are expected to be consistent with conference aims and fall within one of the general contribution areas, but to be smaller in scope and more focused than full papers. Submissions should report on the progress of ongoing research, or present a perspective of practitioners in the field (position papers). Short papers will be presented during the main track of the conference, while position papers and posters will be exhibited during the breaks and will thus focus more on visual presentation and discussion between the author and attendees around the poster.
Depending on space and timing constraints in relation to the number of submissions, it is possible that authors will have submissions accepted to a format other than the one requested.

Short papers (up to 4 pages long): short papers are envisioned as submissions describing original research that is much more focused and smaller in scope than full research papers. Short papers are not expected to provide all the details on the research, but rather focus on the most innovative and salient aspects. In addition, short papers are not expected to include a comprehensive review of related work. Short papers will be presented during the main track of the conference.

Position papers and posters (up to 2 pages long): this category combines submissions reporting on the progress of ongoing research and insights into the lessons learned from current (industrial, practitioners, government, etc.) pervasive healthcare practice. The position papers and posters track is envisioned to provide a practical view of the real challenges and needs of healthcare providers and consumers, and thus to build stronger links between the research community and practitioners in the field. Both position papers and posters will be presented as posters at the conference.

How to Prepare Your Submission

Short paper submissions should be no more than four pages in the IEEE format. Position papers and posters submissions should include an abstract, no more than two pages, in the IEEE format, as well as a preliminary poster design in PDF format. This preliminary design can be formatted as an 8.5” x 11” document. Accepted submissions will be published in both, ACM Digital Library and IEEE Xplore Digital Library (to be confirmed).

To determine the suitability of your submission to the Pervasive Health community, please read more about the research topics of interest and contribution areas listed in the general Call for Papers. All submissions in the short papers category and position papers and posters category should include:

• a concise description of the idea
• the results or findings
• the implications of the work to the community who may be present
• recommendations for further investigation

Submissions must be clearly written, carefully proofread, and correctly formatted. Authors are expected to “anonymize” their submissions (for all categories), meaning that any identifying information related to authors and their institutions should be removed from the title and header areas of the submitted work, as well as absent from any document properties or other meta-data.

How to Submit

Upload your anonymized submission in IEEE format, as a PDF file, to the Electronic Submission Web site (link) by 11:59pm EST 6 March 2013. Follow the instructions for the file upload and enter the requested information, including author information, keywords, and abstract in the online submission form. Poster submissions should include an additional preliminary poster design in PDF format.
Note that the process of producing a PDF file of your submission can sometimes cause changes in the length of the contributions. Authors are advised to generate and check PDFs of their submissions to verify that their final submission stays within the length restrictions of the Pervasive Health submission process.

Review Criteria

Each submission will be reviewed based on the clarity of the results, the quality of the written presentation, its contribution to the field of pervasive systems for healthcare, and its ability to generate discussion among participants. The submission’s suitability for presentation as a short talk or poster will be considered as well.

Review Process

Each paper will be blind, peer-reviewed by members of the Pervasive Health 2013 program committee with additional expert reviewers drawn from relevant research domains.

Submissions will be evaluated based on their originality, significance of the contribution to the field, technical correctness and presentation. The paper should make explicit how the work offers unique and substantial contributions beyond what has already been published or submitted.

Paper and poster submissions will be reviewed by 3 to 4 reviewers and individually discussed by the program committee. Reviews will be returned to the authors for feedback and guidance.  Reviewing will be 2-way blinded: reviewers will be given the anonymized submissions with author-excluded information, and reviewers will not be identified to authors.

Confidentiality of submissions is maintained during the review process. All submitted materials for rejected papers will be kept confidential in perpetuity. All submitted materials for accepted papers will be kept confidential until the date of the workshop. Submissions should contain no information or materials that will be proprietary or confidential at the time of publication, and should cite no publications that will be proprietary or confidential at the time of publication.

Upon Acceptance

The primary author of an accepted paper or poster will receive instructions on how to prepare for the conference, including details on talk length and poster presentation guidelines. The date for camera-ready versions of accepted short talks and papers will be announced in early 2013.

At the Conference

A digital projector will be available for short talks, but presenters are encouraged to bring their own laptops for their presentation. Poster printing guidelines and instructions for presentation will be posted soon. Poster authors must attend their poster during a scheduled poster session for discussion with conference attendees. We also encourage you to be available during breaks.
